Booking tips: timing, platforms and hidden fees

How far ahead

• Cherry blossom, Golden Week (late Apr–early May), autumn in Kyoto: 4–6 months
• Popular ryokan: 3–6 months
• Business hotels outside peak season: 2–6 weeks is fine

Platforms

Booking.com and Agoda have the widest range; Rakuten Travel and Jalan (both have English sites) often have better ryokan rates and meal plans; Japanican specialises in ryokan. Check the hotel's own site too.

Hidden costs

• Local accommodation taxes (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and more) — often charged at check-in
• Onsen bathing tax (¥150 per person per night) at hot-spring towns
• Ryokan prices quoted per person, not per room
• Room sizes: a 'double' can be 12 m² — check square metres before you book
