Why tipping can cause confusion, and the few exceptions.

Japan has no tipping culture. Leaving money on the table usually results in staff running after you to return it. Good service is simply expected and included.

  • Restaurants, taxis, hotels, bars: no tip
  • High-end restaurants and hotels may add a 10–15% service charge
  • Some izakaya add a small cover charge (otōshi) with a starter dish
  • Exception: private guides or a ryokan's personal attendant may accept a gift envelope — never loose cash
