If your nationality isn't visa-exempt, you apply either through the Japan e-Visa portal (for eligible nationalities applying from eligible countries) or through a Japanese embassy, consulate or an authorised visa agency.
The e-Visa route
- Check eligibility on the MOFA 'JAPAN eVISA' site — it depends on both your nationality and where you live
- Create an account and complete the online form
- Upload a passport scan, photo, itinerary and proof of funds
- Pay the fee online where required
- Receive a 'visa issuance notice' by email — show it on your phone at check-in and on arrival
The embassy or agency route
- Application form and recent passport photo
- Passport and copies
- Flight reservation and daily itinerary
- Bank statements (typically last 3–6 months)
- Employment letter or proof of study
Timing
Allow at least 2–3 weeks. Standard processing is around five working days after acceptance, but peak seasons (cherry blossom, Golden Week, autumn) back up quickly. Apply no earlier than three months before travel.
